Hebrew school

Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 12:00 for kids from kindergarten to sixth grade. Hebrew reading, holidays they get to make and taste, and Jewish stories — taught by teachers who know every child's name.

Our Hebrew school is small on purpose: four classes, never more than twelve children in a room, and a teacher plus a teen helper in each. Kids learn to read Hebrew, but mostly they learn that being Jewish is something you do with your hands — baking, building a sukkah, wrapping a Chanukah gift for a child who has none.

Parents are welcome to stay for coffee in the lobby. Most Sundays a few of them do.

Sunday mornings

What your child does here

Two and a half hours that go by fast.

Hebrew reading

Letter by letter, at the child's own pace, so every kid reads from the prayer book by fourth grade.

Holiday workshops

Shofars before Rosh Hashanah, olive oil pressing before Chanukah, matzah baking before Passover.

Mitzvah projects

Each class takes on a project a year — cards for seniors, food for families, a toy drive.

Friends

The same small group every week, and a class party for every holiday.

Enrolling

From first visit to first Sunday

  1. 1. Come to a Sunday

Bring your child for a free trial morning, or come to our open day.

  2. 2. Fill in one form

Your child's name, grade and anything the teacher should know.

  3. 3. Start any week

Children join throughout the year. We help newcomers catch up quietly.

Questions

Hebrew school questions

What does it cost?

$360 a year per child, with a sibling discount. If the cost is a problem, tell the Rebbetzin — no child stays home because of money.

My child has never been to Hebrew school. Will they be behind?

No. Each class mixes beginners and readers, and the teacher plans for both.

Is it only for families who keep kosher or Shabbat?

No. Most of our families don't. Every Jewish child is welcome.

Is there a bar or bat mitzvah track?

Yes. Fifth and sixth graders can start preparing here; see our Bar and Bat Mitzvah page.
